Yamato Dance - Yamato Dance
Also written as Yamatomai or Wamai. A uniquely Japanese musical dance that originated from the customs and dances of the Yamato region in ancient times. Currently handed down as a type of gagaku, it is performed at enthronement ceremonies, memorial services, and Shinto rituals. The dance is performed by four people, and the accompanying music is performed by two singers, a shakubyoshi (a traditional Japanese scepter), a ryuteki (a traditional Japanese flute), and a hichiriki (a traditional Japanese flute). The songs sung at this time are called Yamatoka (traditional Japanese poems). It is handed down at the Imperial Household Agency Music Department, Kasuga Taisha Shrine, and other places.
