A climbing annual plant of the Convolvulaceae family. Native to tropical America, it has long been cultivated in Japan as an ornamental plant. The stems grow to 1-2m and twine around other plants in a left-handed manner. The leaves are alternate, stalked, pinnate, each with a thread-like lobe, and are beautiful green, measuring 3-4cm in length. In summer, long stalks appear in the leaf axils, and two red flowers appear on each stalk. Occasionally, some species bear white flowers. There are five green calyxes, and the corolla is elongated and trumpet-shaped, with five lobes at the tip and a star-shaped flat opening. The capsule is egg-shaped, with black, elongated seeds inside.
