There is much debate about the subdivision of the Gao Mountain languages, but there is no disagreement on three points: (1) Atayal and Sedeq are closely related and form the Atayalic group, (2) Tsou, Kanakanabu, and Saaroa are closely related and form the Tsouic group, and (3) Yami of Orchid Island belongs to the Batanic group of the Philippines rather than to the languages of Taiwan. All other languages (including the Pingpu languages, who became Han Chinese early on and lost their unique customs and language) were previously thought to belong to the Paiwanic group, but various problems have arisen as research and studies have progressed.
