Albert von Le Coq

1860‐1930
German orientalist. Born in Berlin. In 1900, he became an unpaid employee of the Berlin Ethnographic Museum. From 1902 onwards, he became a key member of the German Turfan Expedition along with Grünwedel, and explored the Kucha and Turfan regions over four expeditions (first in 1902-03, second in 1904-05, third in 1905-07, fourth in 1913-14). He collected and preserved many murals from the caves in various places, and introduced them in works such as Late Ancient Period of Buddhists in Central Asia, vol. 7 (1922-33). However, the collection of murals is now strongly criticized by the Chinese side.

ドイツの東洋学者。ベルリン生れ。1900年ベルリン民俗博物館無給職員となる。02年以降グリュンウェーデルとともにドイツ･トゥルファン探検隊の主要メンバーとなり，4次(第1次1902‐03，第2次1904‐05，第3次1905‐07，第4次1913‐14)にわたってクチャ，トゥルファン地方を探検した。各地の石窟の壁画を多数採取･将来し，《中央アジア仏教徒の古代終期》7巻(1922‐33)などで，その紹介を行ったが，壁画の採取に対しては現在，中国側から強く非難されている。
