River hunting - Kawagari

Japanese: 川狩り - かわがり
River hunting - Kawagari
The word "kawagari" had two different meanings. One was catching fish in a river, and the other was a method of transporting timber by using the current of a river. Some examples remain as dialects even today. In the Chichibu region of Saitama Prefecture and Oki Islands in Shimane Prefecture, going to the riverbank to catch fish is called "kawagari." In the latter case, in Minamikoma District, Yamanashi Prefecture, Shuchi District, Shizuoka Prefecture, Kitashitara District, Aichi Prefecture, Yoshiki District, Gifu Prefecture, Yoshino District, Nara Prefecture, and Hidaka District, Wakayama Prefecture, the act of letting a single piece of timber float down the river without assembling it into a raft is called "kawagari."
