Sternbergia - Sternbergia

Japanese:
Sternbergia - Sternbergia

A bulbous plant of the Amaryllidaceae family (APG classification: Amaryllidaceae) planted in summer or autumn. It is also called yellow Zephyranthes, as opposed to the white-flowered Zephyranthes candida (Lindl.) Herb., because the flower shape is similar. The bulb is a bulb covered with black skin. From September to October, it produces flower stalks about 20 cm long with leather-string-like leaves, and blooms into beautiful golden yellow flowers about 5 cm in diameter that resemble crocuses of the Iridaceae family (APG classification: Iridaceae). Native to the Mediterranean coast.

It can be planted from July to mid-September, but those planted later will bloom when the leaves have just started to grow. It grows best in full sun, but is highly cold-tolerant, so it does not need to be replanted for 4 to 5 years.

Herb.
