Lucretius - Titus Lucretius Carus

Lucretius - Titus Lucretius Carus

Roman philosophical poet. His only work, De Rerum Natura (On the Nature of Things), 6 volumes, 7,415 lines, is an epic poem that expresses the atomistic materialism of Greek philosopher Epicurus. It is an enlightening work that aims to liberate us from religion and overcome the fear of death through a scientific understanding of nature, and its subjects of elucidation include the principles of the universe, the human soul and mental phenomena, the origins of celestial bodies, living things, humanity and civilization, and natural disasters. As a poem, it is a masterpiece rich in imagination with beautiful metaphorical explanations, and although it is described as somewhat old-fashioned and technical, it is considered a classic of Latin epic poetry on a par with Virgil. Little is known about his life.
