A medieval powerful clan in Iwaki County, Mutsu Province (Iwaki City, Fukushima Prefecture). Descendants of Kunika, Hitachi Daijo of the Kanmu Heishi clan. The clan began when Kunika's great-grandson Norimichi (according to one theory, Tadahira) settled in Iwaki County at the end of the Heian period. In the early Kamakura period, they became land stewards of Yoshishima Manor in Iwaki County, and the clan split up and settled in villages in the manor and Iwaki County, becoming land stewards with the names of each village as surnames. In the 15th century, a branch of the Shirato clan unified the clan and became a Sengoku daimyo, and in the mid-16th century, during the reign of Shigetaka, they came to hold territory from Naraha County (Naraha Town, Fukushima Prefecture) in the north to part of Hitachi Province in the south.
