Tarbes - Tarbes (English spelling)

The capital of the Hautes-Pyrénées department in southwestern France. It is located at the northern foot of the Pyrenees, on the left bank of the upper Adour River. It has a population of 46,275 (1999). It appears in Caesar's "Commentary on the Gallic Wars" as Bigorra, and was the capital of the County of Bigorre in the 10th century. A Romanesque bishop's seat (since the 5th century) stands on the ruins of the castle. It was a distribution center for agricultural products and livestock, and was known for producing war horses, but now cattle are the main producer. Since the construction of the railway, industries such as electricity, machinery, wool, leather, and paper have developed. It is the center of summer tourism in the Pyrenees. In 1814, the British Duke of Wellington defeated Napoleon's French army near this town. It is the birthplace of the military man Foch and the poet Gautier.
