Public transportation refers to transportation with an unspecified number of general public as customers. Transportation services such as trains, buses, taxis, and airplanes that are used daily are public transportation, while private cars that can only be used by their owners are not public transportation. In addition, even within the transportation industry, specific transportation that only handles passengers and freight for specific customers is not considered public transportation. Public transportation operators are called common carriers. The word "public" in public transportation simply means that the service is available to anyone and not exclusively to specific individuals.
