A legendary chaste woman from ancient Rome who is said to have died around 510 B.C. According to legend, she was the beautiful wife of Tarquinius Collatinus, but was raped by Sextus, the son of the Roman king Tarquinius Superbus, and committed suicide, entrusting her relatives with revenge. Her death stirred up hatred among the Roman people against the tyranny of the royal family, and they revolted, expelled the king, and established the Republic (509 B.C.). Her tragedy itself is not recognized as historical fact. [Ryuichi Hirata] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
