…The Pythian Games, one of the four great Greek games, were held every four years at Delphi, and winners in the various artistic and athletic contests were awarded crowns made of laurel leaves (the sacred tree of Apollo). The god entered Italy through Etruscan and southern Greek colonies, and in the Roman Republic he was worshipped primarily as a god of healing and prophecy, but after Emperor Augustus dedicated a temple to him on the Palatine Hill in 28 BC, Apollo Palatine became a great god comparable to Jupiter, the best and greatest. In art, he has always been depicted as an ideal youth, and famous sculptures include the statue of Apollo on the west pediment of the Temple of Zeus at Olympia (c. 460 BC) and the Belvedere Apollo in the Vatican Museums (a copy of a Hellenistic work). …
