1776‐1837 German zoologist. Born in Bremen, he studied medicine in Göttingen before returning to his hometown. Influenced by German natural philosophy, he attempted to create a theoretical system for the phenomenon of life, and was one of the first to advocate the academic field of biology in the German-speaking world. He also carried out anatomical and microscopic studies of animals, and presented the idea that the cell is the basic unit of life. However, since he was based within the framework of natural philosophy, he did not have any evolutionary ideas. His brother, Ludolph Christian T. (1779-1864), was a botanist.
