Gottfried Reinhold Treviranus

German zoologist. Born in Bremen, he studied medicine in Göttingen before returning to his hometown. Influenced by German natural philosophy, he attempted to create a theoretical system for the phenomenon of life, and was one of the first to advocate the academic field of biology in the German-speaking world. He also carried out anatomical and microscopic studies of animals, and presented the idea that the cell is the basic unit of life. However, since he was based within the framework of natural philosophy, he did not have any evolutionary ideas. His brother, Ludolph Christian T. (1779-1864), was a botanist.

ドイツの動物学者。ブレーメンに生まれ，ゲッティンゲンで医学を学び，故郷に帰った。彼は，ドイツの自然哲学の影響を受け，生命現象に関する理論的体系をつくろうと試みて，ドイツ語圏で生物学Biologieという学問分野を唱道した最初の一人である。また動物の解剖学的･顕微鏡的研究をも行い，細胞が生命の基本単位であるとする考えをも述べている。しかし，自然哲学の枠内にあったため，進化論的な発想はない。弟のLudolph Christian T.(1779‐1864)は植物学者である。
