Louisville - Louisville (English spelling)

The largest city in northwestern Kentucky, United States, and the county seat of Jefferson County. Population 256,231 (2000). Located on the left bank of the Ohio River, it is the center of industry, finance, commerce, and distribution. In addition to traditional bourbon whiskey brewing and tobacco manufacturing, industries such as electrical appliances, agricultural machinery, automobiles, petrochemicals, furniture, plastics, and glass have developed, and the city is 14th in the United States in terms of industrial product shipments. A fort built in 1778 near a waterfall on the Ohio River was the foundation of the settlement. It became a town in 1780, and after the British and Native Americans were driven out of the Ohio Valley, it developed with the development of shipping on the Ohio River, and became the center of commerce and industry in Kentucky with the opening of two railroads in the 1850s. There are 10 universities in the city, including the University of Louisville, the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, and the University of Kentucky School of Pharmacy, and the famous Kentucky Derby is held at Churchill Downs Racetrack. The city is named after King Louis XVI of France.
