Awakened sentient being

...More accurately, Bodhisattva. The free translation is "enlightened sentient being." Initially, it referred to Shakyamuni, who had accumulated good deeds in the Jataka, a story of the Buddha's past life, but with the rise of Mahayana Buddhism, it came to refer generally to "a practitioner striving to attain enlightenment."
