A city in central Tokyo. Established as a city in 1963. It spans the alluvial plains on the south bank of the Tama River and the Tama Hills. The Chuo Line and Keio Line run through the city. During the Edo period, the city center developed as a ferry stop and post town on the Koshu Road. Large-scale housing complexes were developed in the 1950s and 60s, and the city flourished as a satellite city of the metropolitan area. Industrial complexes were also created, with large factories producing automobiles, film, electronics, watches, and more, making the city one of the top manufacturing cities in the Tama area with a shipment value of 939.3 billion yen (2003). It is home to Takahatafudo Temple, Tama Zoo, and Mogusa Garden. Area: 27.55 km2 .
