From 1946 to 1957, he was called Shcherbakov. A city in Yaroslavl Oblast, western Russia. It is a river port city located about 80 km northwest of the oblast capital Yaroslavl, where the Volga River flows out of the Rybinsk artificial lake. A settlement dating back to the 12th century became a city in 1777. It developed as a river port after the Mariinsk Waterway was opened in 1810, connecting the Volga River system with the Baltic Sea. In 1941, the Volga River upstream of the city was dammed to build a huge artificial lake and a hydroelectric power station. In 1964, the Mariinsk Waterway was remodeled into the Volga-Baltic Waterway, and the city has prospered as a key point for inland water transport. Its main industries are machinery (printing, road construction, wood processing), cables, wood processing, matches, and food. It is about 280 km north-northeast of Moscow, and is connected by rail, highways, and waterways. Population: 207,710 (2010).
