A type of complex lipid, a general term for lipids that have phosphate esters and phosphonate esters. Also called phosphatide. They are broadly classified into glycerophospholipids (or phosphoglycerides), which have glycerol as the alcohol, and sphingophospholipids, which have sphingosine. All phospholipids are polar lipids, and although they exist in small amounts in a free state, they are important components of biological membranes.
