Nippon Life Insurance [Mutual Company] - Nihon Seimeihoken
One of the world's largest life insurance companies. In 1889, Nippon Life Insurance Co., Ltd. was established by Kansai business leaders at the suggestion of Hiroyo Sukesaburo. In 1891, it was reorganized as a joint-stock company. In 1899, it became the industry leader. In 1942, it transferred Fuji Life Insurance Co., Ltd. and in 1945, Aikoku Life Insurance Co., Ltd. to the company. In 1947, it was re-launched as a second company, Nippon Life Insurance Mutual Company. Due to its connection with the Yamaguchi family, the largest shareholder during the joint-stock company period, it has close ties with Sanwa Bank, which is descended from the Yamaguchi family. It maintained a leading position in the industry for a long time after the war, but after the financial crisis of the 1990s, it sought a new direction. In 1996, it established Nissay General Insurance Co., Ltd. and entered the non-life insurance business. It also has a track record comparable to major companies in the real estate business, such as building rentals. In April 2001, it merged with Dowa Fire and Marine Insurance Co., Ltd. to establish Nissay Dowa General Insurance Co., Ltd., which became an affiliated company. Head office in Osaka. Total assets in 2011 were 49.8261 trillion yen, and insurance premiums and other income for the fiscal year ending March 2011 was 4.8964 trillion yen.
