Paul, who was a Jew and even persecuted Christians because of his zeal for the law, was converted to Christianity (c. 34) "by the revelation of Jesus Christ" (Galatians 1:12), and through three missionary journeys he established churches in cities around the Aegean Sea, eventually reaching Rome. After his first missionary journey (some scholars consider it to have been before), he went up from Antioch to Jerusalem and met with the "leading men" of the local church (James, the brother of Jesus, Peter, and John) (the so-called "Jerusalem Apostolic Council," c. 48), and received approval to preach the gospel to the Gentiles without the requirement of circumcision (Galatians 2:1-10; Acts 15:1-35). Nevertheless, in response to Jewish Christians who regarded obedience to the law as a condition for salvation, Paul, based on the tradition mentioned in (1) above, developed the so-called "theory of justification by faith," which holds that one is justified only by faith, but he acknowledged the validity of the law as a means of maintaining a justified and saved existence in this world (Romans 3:21-31).

　ユダヤ教徒として律法に対する熱心のあまり，キリスト教を迫害さえしたパウロは，〈イエス･キリストの啓示によって〉(《ガラテヤ人への手紙》1：12)キリスト教に回心し(34ころ)，3回の伝道旅行によりエーゲ海周縁諸都市に教会を設立し，遂にはローマにまで至った。第一伝道旅行の後(これをその前とみなす学者たちもある)，彼はアンティオキアからエルサレムに上り，同地の教会の〈おもだった人たち〉(イエスの弟ヤコブ，ペテロ，ヨハネ)と会談し(いわゆる〈エルサレム使徒会議〉，48ころ)，割礼を前提することなしに異邦人に福音を宣教する承認を得た(《ガラテヤ人への手紙》2：1～10，《使徒行伝》15：1～35)。にもかかわらず律法の順守を救済の条件とするユダヤ人キリスト者に対し，パウロは上記(1)の伝承に拠りつつ，信仰によってのみ義とされるといういわゆる〈信仰義認論〉を展開したが，この世にあって義とされ救われた存在を持続する手段として律法の有効性を認めた(《ローマ人への手紙》3：21～31)。…
