The Book of the Father

… In 17th-century Western Europe, small families centered around a husband and wife and children had already been formed, including servants, but the small family was still considered a productive and supportive unit, and the father was expected to manage the household. Therefore, the European household books up to that point, called Hausväterbücher (also called "father's books"), were written for the father of the household, and focused on how he should manage the household community, which was primarily a productive function.
