Stavira-vāda (English spelling) Sthaviravada

This was called the "Fundamental Schism" and marked the beginning of the era of Hinayana Buddhism. In Sanskrit it is called Sthavira-vāda, and in Pāli it is called Thera-vāda. There are major differences between the Southern and Northern traditions regarding the cause of the fundamental schism.
