1806‐94 American chemical engineer. Born in New Orleans, he studied in Paris. Around 1830, while in France, he invented a high-thermal-efficiency triple-effect evaporator using a reduced pressure system. After returning to the United States in 1843, he succeeded in commercializing it at a sucrose factory in Louisiana, and obtained an American patent for it. This device was widely adopted in the European sugar industry in Germany, France, and other places in the second half of the 19th century, and was also introduced in Japan by the Meiji government. He died in Paris. [Furukawa Yasushi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
