Norbert Rillieux

American chemical engineer. Born in New Orleans, he studied in Paris. Around 1830, while in France, he invented a high-thermal-efficiency triple-effect evaporator using a reduced pressure system. After returning to the United States in 1843, he succeeded in commercializing it at a sucrose factory in Louisiana, and obtained an American patent for it. This device was widely adopted in the European sugar industry in Germany, France, and other places in the second half of the 19th century, and was also introduced in Japan by the Meiji government. アメリカの化学技術者。ニューオーリンズに生まれ，パリで学ぶ。滞仏中の1830年ころ減圧式で高熱効率の三重効用蒸発缶を考案，帰米後43年にルイジアナのショ糖工場で工業化に成功，アメリカの特許を得た。この装置は19世紀後半ドイツ，フランスなどヨーロッパの製糖業に広く採用され，日本でも明治政府により導入された。パリで没した。【古川安】
