A village in Nei County, central Toyama Prefecture. Population 2,200 (1995). Most of the area is mountainous, continuing from the Hida Highlands, with the Yamada River, a tributary of the Jinzu River, flowing north through the center. In early modern times, it was part of the Kaga Domain, and from 1639 (Kan'ei 16) it was part of the Toyama Domain. In early modern times, Sukubo was the site of lodgings for ascetic monks on their way to Mount Kongodo in the south. After World War II, there was a significant outflow of population, and four of the 25 settlements were abandoned. Since 1962, land reclamation has been promoted through a prefectural project, but the main source of income is day labor for civil engineering work.
