Li Liufang (English name)

Japanese: 李流芳 - りりゅうほう（英語表記）Lǐ Liú fāng

1575‐1629
A Chinese painter of the Ming dynasty. His courtesy name was Changyu and he went by the pen name Danyuan. He was from She County, Anhui Province, and lived in Jiading. He was friends with Qian Qianyi, and was known as one of the "Four Gentlemen of Jiading" along with Tang Shisheng, Lou Jian, and Cheng Jiasui. He became a provincial governor in 1606 (the 34th year of the Wanli era), but he did not enter the service as he disliked the tyranny of the eunuchs, and instead led a life of leisure devoted to poetry, calligraphy, and painting. He studied Ni Zan and Wu Zhen of the Yuan dynasty, and developed a unique style of painting that expresses eccentricity, and is counted as one of the "Nine Friends of Painting." [Furuhara Hironobu]

中国，明代の画家。字は長蘅，檀園と号した。安徽省歙県（しようけん）の出身で嘉定に流寓した。銭謙益と親交があり，唐時升，婁堅（ろうけん），程嘉燧と〈嘉定の四君子〉と称せられた。万暦34年(1606)の挙人となったが，宦官（かんがん）の専横を嫌って出仕せず，詩書画に自適の生活を送った。元の倪瓚（げいさん），呉鎮を学んで独特の逸気を表した画風を開き，〈画中九友〉の一人に数えられる。【古原宏伸】
