Born April 14, 1879 in Richmond, Virginia. [Died] May 5, 1958. Richmond, Virginia. American novelist and poet. Born to a prominent Virginia family, he worked as a journalist for a time after graduating from the College of William and Mary, but after publishing his debut novel, The Eagle's Shadow, in 1904, a satire on the greed of money, he began to work energetically as a writer. He wrote over 50 works, but his best-known work is the epic series Biography of Manuel (18 volumes), which is set in the fictional medieval town of Poatem and tells the story of Don Manuel and his descendants. However, with the exception of Jurgen (1919), which was criticized for immorality, his works did not attract much public attention and were well received by critics. In the 1930s, he was completely ignored due to his elaborate writing style and his highbrow, pessimistic view of life and art. Some have described him as the "American Anatole France," as he was someone who rejected the harsh reality of life and indulged in fantasy while harboring disillusionment and doubt within himself. He also wrote a collection of poems and a book on genealogy. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
