The capital of Massachusetts, USA. Historically, culturally and economically, it is the central city of New England. Located on Massachusetts Bay, it was settled by Puritans in the 1620s and became the center of colonies along the bay. It was the base of the American independence movement and is known for the Boston Tea Party of 1773. Today, Boston is the center of the financial industry, including banking and insurance, and the largest wool market in the country. It is a major producer of woolen and cotton textiles, and industries such as electronics, clothing and printing are also well developed. Along with nearby Gloucester, it is a fishing port and has a thriving shipbuilding industry. There is a continuous influx of immigrants, and as life becomes more stable, they tend to move out of the city. There is Boston University (founded in 1869), the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Boston Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1881, is world-famous. Along with Cambridge across the Charles River, it was the center of learning and culture in old America, and there are many historical sites and museums related to the independence movement, making it a famous tourist destination. A city in the southeast of Lincolnshire, eastern England, England. It is part of the Boston district, including the surrounding area. It is located about 45 km southeast of the county capital Lincoln, and about 7 km upstream from the mouth of the Witham River, which flows into the Wash on the North Sea. It began with the construction of a monastery in the mid-7th century, and in the 13th century, it was a port for the Hanseatic League, dealing in wool and wine, and paying higher taxes than London. In the 16th century, the monastery and trading guilds were dismantled, and the Witham River became overflowing with silt, causing the port's functions to decline, but in the mid-18th century, dredging restored the port. Today, with the rich agricultural fen region at its back, the city mainly ships agricultural products. Food processing is also an industry. St. Botolph's Cathedral, with its 83m-high tower, was restored in 1857 by the citizens of Boston, USA. The district area is 360 km2 . The district population is 55,739 (2001). Urban population: 35,124 (2001).
