A scholar and politician in the mid-Joseon period of Korea. Born in Deoksu, Gyeonggi Province. His real name was Ji, his pen name was Sukheon, his posthumous name was Munseong, and his family home was Tokunaga. Yulgok was his pen name, and he is generally known by that name today. He first studied Zen, but was dissatisfied and devoted himself to the study of Neo-Confucianism. At the age of 23, he studied under Yi Tōgye. In 1564 (the 19th year of the reign of King Myeongjong), he passed the civil service examination and the liberal arts examination. He held important government positions, including Household Assistant Minister, Minister of Military Affairs, and Right Supporter. He is a figure who stands on a par with Yi Tōgye in the history of Korean Confucianism, and advocated the theory of the central principle in contrast to Yi Tōgye's theory of the central principle. Not only a scholar, but also a practical politician, he advocated bold reforms in the economy, politics, and military, and worked hard to implement them. His main works include "Yulgok Complete Works," "Seonghak Jiyō," and "The Doctrine of the Mean and the Doctrine of the Mean."

朝鮮，李朝中期の学者，政治家。京畿道徳水の人。本名は珥 (じ) ，字は叔献，諡は文成，本貫は徳永。栗谷は号で，現在は一般にこの号で呼ばれる。初め禅を学んだが，あきたらず朱子学研究に専念。 23歳のとき李退渓 (りたいけい) に師事。明宗 19 (1564) 年生員試および文科に及第。戸曹佐郎，兵曹判書，右賛成など政府の要職を歴任。彼は朝鮮儒学史上，李退渓と双璧をなす人物で，李退渓の主理説に対し主気説を唱えた。学者であるばかりでなく，実践的な政治家として経済，政治，軍事など大胆な改革を主張し，その実施に努力した。主著『栗谷全書』『聖学輯要』『中庸吐釈』。
