Superfinishing - Choushiage (English spelling)

A mechanical surface finishing method. Polishing methods using abrasive wheels or abrasive grains include lapping, which moves in only one direction, honing, which adds a rotational motion, and superfinishing, which applies fine vibrations to the wheel while the workpiece moves. The later the method, the better the finished surface. The wheel used for superfinishing should vary depending on the material of the workpiece, but vitrify wheels of the WA or GC series of #400 or #1000 are usually used. It can be finished in 6 to 20 times less time than regular lapping, and the finished surface is the smoothest currently known, and is good enough for a gauge block surface.

機械的な表面仕上げ法の一つ。研摩用砥石(といし)あるいは砥粒による研摩法には、一方向にだけ動くラッピングlapping、回転運動が加わるホーニングhoning、それに加工品の運動と同時に砥石に細かい振動を与える超仕上げがある。仕上げ面は後のほうのものほどよくなる。超仕上げに使う砥石は工作物の材質によって異なるべきであるが、400番ないし1000番のWAまたはGC系統のものでビトリファイト砥石が使われる。通常のラップ工作に比べて6～20倍も短時間で仕上げられるが、仕上げ面は現在知られているもっとも平滑度の高いもので、ゲージブロック面の程度によい。
