Gallstones

Japanese: 胆石 - たんせき
Gallstones
These stones form in the gallbladder or biliary tract. They range in size from a grain of sand to the size of a chicken egg. They are mainly composed of cholesterol and bilirubin (bile pigments), and rarely contain calcium, fatty acids, polysaccharides, etc., and mixed stones of these substances are also seen. The causes of stones are bile stasis, changes in bile components, and inflammation of the biliary tract or gallbladder. It is said that one in 15 to 20 Japanese adults has gallstones, but some people do not develop gallstones and remain asymptomatic. These people are called gallstone carriers and are distinguished from people with gallstones.
