A marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Asteroidea, family Acanthidae. A large, beautiful blue starfish found on coral reefs. Colors range from bright blue to gray-blue, turquoise, yellow-green, or even dirty green. It usually has five arms, but it is not uncommon to see four or six. The arms are stiff and rounded, slightly tapered at the base, and covered with granules. They can reach an arm length of 20 centimeters. They are commonly found in coral reef areas in the tropical waters of the western Pacific and Indian Oceans south of the Amami and Okinawa Islands, but are occasionally found off the southern tip of the Kii Peninsula, the southwestern tip of Shikoku, and southwestern Kyushu.
