Sayamidoro - Sayamidoro

Japanese:
Sayamidoro - Sayamidoro
A genus of minute, single-row filamentous green algae that grow on aquatic plants and poles in rice paddies, ponds, lakes, marshes, and other places. Approximately 400 species are known worldwide, and about 65 in Japan. Sexual reproduction is by eggs and sperm, and asexual reproduction is by zoospores. The order Oedogoniales was established because both the swimming sperm and zoospores have numerous flagella arranged in a crown-like shape at the tip, and because they undergo a unique pattern of somatic cell division not seen in other green algae. This order includes the family Oedogoniaceae, which includes the genus Oedogonia, which has unbranched filaments, as well as two genera: Bulbochaete , which has stinging hairs on the apical cells of the branching filaments, and Oedocladium , which has no stinging hairs on the apical cells.
