Lilith

The first woman created from the earth along with Adam, and his wife. Its origins date back to Babylonian folk legend, and are found in the Talmud. In a story said to have been told by Ben Sira, the virgin mother of the prophet Jeremiah, Lilith bore many demons to Adam, but disobeyed Adam and flew off into the Red Sea, hiding with a curse. However, three angels, commanded by the Lord, searched for her and threatened to kill 100 of her children every day. Lilith begged for forgiveness, and in return was given the power to torture human babies.

アダムとともに土よりつくられた最初の女性で，彼の妻。淵源（えんげん）はバビロニアの民間伝説にさかのぼり，ユダヤ教典タルムード中に見いだせる。預言者エレミアの処女の母ベン･シラが語ったと言われる話では，リリスはアダムとの間に多くの悪魔を生んだがアダムに従わず，のろいの言葉とともに紅海に飛び去って隠れるが，3人の天使が主の命令で捜し出し，毎日彼女の子ども100人を殺すと脅迫する。リリスは許しを請い，その代りに人間の赤子を苦しめる力を得る。
