Insects have fewer types of hormones than vertebrates, and the only endocrine organs known are the brain, corpus allata, and juvenile body. However, the effects of each hormone are diverse, and many aspects are still unknown. Particularly well-known insect hormones are the metamorphic hormones. A series of complex metamorphoses are carried out by a combination of two hormones: ecdysone, which induces molting, and juvenile hormone, which inhibits pupation and stimulates the maturation of various organs. Juvenile hormone has a relatively simple structure, so compounds with hormonal activity can be synthesized, making it highly useful in agriculture, such as as an insecticide.

昆虫のホルモンは脊椎 (せきつい) 動物に比べて種類が少なく，内分泌器官も脳，アラタ体，幼若体が知られる程度である。しかし，1つのホルモンの持つ作用は多種多様であり，いまだに未知な部分も多い。昆虫ホルモンで特に有名なのは変態ホルモンである。脱皮を誘導するエクジソンと，蛹化の阻止やさまざまな器官の成熟の機能を持つ幼若ホルモンの2種類のホルモンの組み合わせにより，一連の複雑な変態が行なわれている。幼若ホルモンは比較的簡単な構造のため，ホルモン活性を持つ化合物が合成でき，殺虫剤等農業面でも利用価値の高いものとなっている。
