Siderite (siderite)

Japanese: リョウ鉄鉱(菱鉄鉱) - りょうてっこう（英語表記）siderite

A type of iron ore. Its chemical composition is FeCO ₃ . It forms a continuous solid solution with MnCO ₃ and MgCO ₃ , and a partial solid solution with CaCO ₃ . It belongs to the hexagonal crystal system and is usually rhombohedral. The crystal faces are often curved. It also occurs as grape-shaped or fish egg-shaped aggregates. It is completely cleaved {101}, has a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4.5, and a specific gravity of 3.96. It is translucent or semi-translucent, and can be gray, yellow-gray, green-gray, or brown-red in color. It dissolves slowly in cold hydrochloric acid, and dissolves with effervescence in hot hydrochloric acid.
