Ryoto

Japanese:
Ryoto

A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. His real name was Iwata Masayuki, and he was commonly known as Gonshichiro. He was originally called Danyuu and later Danyuusai, and he succeeded the third head of the Shinpukan Haito. He was a priest at Ise Shrine (one theory says he was a Kagura man), but he became familiar with haiku from an early age, and became a disciple of Basho in his later years. He founded a school called the Ise school, and made numerous pilgrimages to various places, including Hokuriku, Kyushu, and Kyoto, and worked energetically with his disciple Otsuyu to expand its influence. His style was light and simple, like Shiko's Mino school, but he made a great contribution to the spread of haiku to the provinces. His edited works include "Kawagozure" and "Yamanakashu."
