Kumiya

Japanese: 組屋 - くみや

One of the early wealthy merchants active in the early modern Bunroku and Keicho periods (1592-1615). Also called Suya. Located in Tsuruga and Obama, relay cities connecting the Ugo domains, where the separation of soldiers and farmers was still immature and the Ugo domains were still indigenous and independent, and where separation of soldiers and farmers was still immature, and the advanced areas of Kinai, Kumiya was active as a carrier of northern shipping. His history before the Sengoku period is unknown, but unlike the wealthy merchants of Moroura who had a lineage of boat-owning merchants, he was a shipping business operator of Obama who had a lineage of red seal ship traders since the Middle Ages. 近世初頭，文禄･慶長期(1592‐1615)に活躍した初期豪商の一人。須屋ともいう。まだ家臣団の土着性，独立性が強く，兵農分離が未熟な羽後諸藩と畿内先進地帯を結ぶ中継都市の敦賀，小浜にあって，北国海運の担い手として活動した。戦国期前の事歴は不明であるが，諸浦の舟持座商人の系譜をもつ豪商と異なり，中世以来朱印船貿易家の系譜をもつ小浜の廻船業者である。後進諸藩の権力強化を援助すべく未発達な商品流通に対応し，当時700～800石積みの舟3～10艘をもっていた豪商の保護育成を図った豊臣氏の支持を受けて，組屋は秀吉蔵入地，津軽など諸藩蔵米の運搬･貨幣化に当たった。
