Located within Todaiji Temple in Zoshicho, Nara City, this temple was originally a temple dedicated to both Sanron and Shingon Buddhism. After the Meiji period, it became the main temple of Todaiji Temple and became a Kegon sect temple. It was founded by Shobo in 875 (Jogan 17), and in 904 (Engi 4), Todaiji Temple's chief priest Dogi relocated Saeki no Sukune's Koshyaku-ji Temple (Saeki-in) to Shobo, aiming to revive Sanron. It was called Tonan-in because it was located to the east of the Great South Gate. By imperial decree in 1071 (Engi 3), the head priest became the head priest of the Sanron sect and absorbed Sanron sect temples such as Gango-ji Temple and Daian-ji Temple to become the head temple of the Sanron sect. Along with the Kegon sect's Sonsho-in, nobles and princes entered the temple, and it played an important role in the Buddhist world of Nara as well as Todaiji Temple.
