〘Noun〙 (From the absence of the glottal stop "n" in "gengyo") 1. An ornament attached to the gable boards of a roof to hide the ends of the ridgepole and beams. The one in the middle is called omogegyo , and the ones on the bottom left and right are called kudari kakegyo, waki kakegyo or gata kakushi. The boards are carved into various shapes and attached. It is said that the origin of the name comes from the fish shape, which is closely related to water, as it represents the fear of fire, but there are no fish-shaped kakegyo in Japan, and depending on the shape there are plum blossom kakegyo, boar's eye kakegyo and turnip kakegyo . 〘名〙 (「げんぎょ」の撥音「ん」の無表記から)① 屋根の破風板につけ、棟木や桁の木口を隠す飾り。中央のものを本懸魚(おもげぎょ)、左右の下のものをくだり懸魚、脇懸魚あるいは桁隠しなどという。板を各種の形にくりぬいて取り付ける。火災を嫌う意味で、水に関係の深い魚形から出たといわれるが、日本には魚形のものはなく、その形によって梅鉢懸魚、猪目(いのめ)懸魚、鏑(かぶら)懸魚などがある。けんぎょ。げんぎょう。〔和漢三才図会(1712)〕② 紋所の名。葉状部が剣の形をしたものと、桔梗(ききょう)の花弁に似ているものの二種ある。六葉。けんぎょ。
