It is said that the origin of the name comes from the fish shape, which is closely related to water, as it represents the fear of fire, but there are no fish-shaped kakegyo in Japan, and depending on the shape there are plum blossom kakegyo, boar's eye kakegyo and turnip kakegyo . 〘名〙 (「げんぎょ」の撥音「ん」の無表記から)① 屋根の破風板につけ、棟木や桁の木口を隠す飾り。中央のものを本懸魚(おもげぎょ)、左右の下のものをくだり懸魚、脇懸魚あるいは桁隠しなどという。板を各種の形にくりぬいて取り付ける。火災を嫌う意味で、水に関係の深い魚形から出たといわれるが、日本には魚形のものはなく、その形によって梅鉢懸魚、猪目(いのめ)懸魚、鏑(かぶら)懸魚などがある。けんぎょ。げんぎょう。〔和漢三才図会(1712)〕② 紋所の名。葉状部が剣の形をしたものと、桔梗(ききょう)の花弁に似ているものの二種ある。六葉。けんぎょ。
