A mountain spirit said to live in the Riesengebirge, which stands on the border between Bohemia and Silesia and contains the source of the Elbe River. One theory also says that it is the king of the gnomes (earth spirits). It became widely known to the world through a total of 241 legends published by Johannes Praetorius (1630-80) over a 10-year period starting in 1662. The modern theory is that the name comes from "Riebezagel", a coarse-haired tail, but a popular etymology theory links it to "Rübe", a turnip (such as in JKA Museuus's fairy tales), and perhaps because of this, there are many stories about medicinal herbs and root vegetables.
