...an ethnic group that is a minority in terms of population and does not form a nation-state (members of a nation that are distinct from others, who share a common language, common customs and beliefs, and even cultural traditions). Generally, the majority or dominant ethnic group identifies itself with the nation, or conversely, identifies itself with the ethnic group.

"We are approaching a fundamentally important point in the modern world where what we have come to call the social community or nation is gradually losing the degree of homogeneous substance of the ethnic group" (T. Parsons). The concepts of ethnic group and "ethnicity" cannot be ignored when considering ethnic groups and ethnic issues in the modern world. Incidentally, ethnicity and ethnic group have traditionally been translated into Japanese as "ethnicity," "ethnic," or "tribal."
