Ryusen Ishikawa

Ryusen Ishikawa

Date of birth and death unknown. Ukiyo-e artist and map editor of the mid-Edo period. He also produced many Ukiyo-zoshi, hanashibon, enpon, and guidebooks. He lived in Asakusa, and his name was Toshiyuki, and he was popularly known as Izaemon. He was known as Ryusen (Ryusen, Ryusen), Ryushu, Kawasueken, Gahaiken, and Yooken. He started to create new styles of illustrated maps in the late 1680s, and produced many maps until around 1720 (5th year of the Kyoho era), including Edo Zukan Komoku (geography book and map, 1689). He was also active as an ukiyo-e artist, and illustrated shunga sets with Furuyama Moroshige, Yamato Kousaku Esho, and Yoshiwara Daikoku Mai (1709). No single paintings have been confirmed. As a comic writer, he wrote works such as "Amorous Edo Murasaki" (1686) and "Honesty Story Encyclopedia" (1687).

生没年未詳。江戸中期の浮世絵師で地図の編画者。浮世草子、噺本(はなしぼん)、艶本(えんぽん)、案内書類の作も多い。浅草に住し、名は俊之(としゆき)、俗称伊左衛門。流宣(流船、流仙)、流舟、河末軒、画俳軒、踊鶯(ようおう)軒と号した。1680年代後半から絵入り地図に新様を打ち出し、『江戸図鑑綱目』(地誌本・地図、1689)をはじめとして1720年(享保5)ごろまで多数の地図を制作した。一方浮世絵師としても活躍し、古山師重(ふるやまもろしげ)と共画の春画組物や『大和(やまと)耕作絵抄』や『吉原大黒舞』(1709)などの挿絵を描いている。一枚絵は確認されていない。また戯作(げさく)者としては『好色江戸紫』(1686)、『正直咄(ばなし)大鑑』(1687)などの作品がある。
