Ibn al-Faqih

Japanese: イブン･アルファキーフ（英語表記）Ibn al‐Faqīh

A Muslim geographer from the late 9th century to the early 10th century. Dates of birth and death unknown. Born in Persia. Nothing is known about his biography. The only work that remains is the "Records of the Various Countries," which is not complete but is a summary. However, this book deals with the entire Islamic world of the time, and is particularly detailed in its description of Persia, and is important in that it conveys not only valuable geographical information but also the state of culture in the second half of the 9th century. Later writers such as Al-Maqdisi and Yaqut also obtained much material from him.

9世紀末から10世紀初めのイスラム教徒で，地理学者。生没年不詳。ペルシア出身。伝記については何もわかっていない。著作は《諸国記》しか残されず，それも完全なかたちではなく要約されたものである。しかし同書は，当時のイスラム世界全体を扱っており，特にペルシアについての記述が詳しく，貴重な地理的情報だけではなく，9世紀後半の文化のようすなども伝えている点で重要である。後代のマクディシーやヤークートも彼から多くの材料を得ている。
