Constitutional Party - Rikkenseito

Japanese: 立憲政党 - りっけんせいとう

A political party during the Liberal Democratic Party period that was organized mainly in the Kinki region. It was seen as "a separate force of the Liberal Democratic Party." Its predecessor was the Kinki Liberal Party, which was formed in September 1881 when Itagaki Taisuke visited Osaka. In November of the same year, it was formed as a separate party from the central Liberal Party (formed in October). It was initially intended to have Itagaki as prime minister, but this did not come to fruition, and Nakajima Nobuyuki, who had been the Liberal Democratic Party's deputy prime minister, took over the role. In February 1882, it announced its formation, bought the Osaka Nippo newspaper, and launched its organ newspaper, the Japan Constitutional Democratic Party Newspaper (edited by Furusawa Shigeru). Its core members were civil rights activists from the Kansai region, such as Furusawa Shigeru, Komuro Shinsuke, Kojima Tadamitsu, and Nagata Ichiji, as well as Kawazu Yuji and Kusama Tokifuku, both of whom were Ohmei employees from Tokyo.

近畿地方を中心に組織された自由民権期の政党。〈自由党の別働隊〉と目された。1881年9月，板垣退助の来阪を機に結成された近畿自由党がその前身。同年11月，中央の自由党(10月結成)とは別個の政党として結成され，総理には当初板垣を迎えようとしたが実現せず，自由党副総理の中島信行が兼任した。82年2月，その組織を発表し，《大阪日報》を買収して機関紙《日本立憲政党新聞》(主筆古沢滋)を創刊した。中心メンバーは古沢滋，小室信介，小島忠里，永田一二ら関西の民権家と，東京から来た嚶鳴社員河津祐之，草間時福。
