French painter. Born in Paris, he worked there his whole life, whereas most painters of the time studied in Italy. He studied in the studio of S. Boué, and in 1644 he decorated the Hôtel Lambert de Trigny. Influenced by Poussin during his stay in Paris in the early 1640s, he painted a classical, harmonious world. From 1650 onwards, he studied the works of Raphael, and was called the "French Raphael." His works demonstrate the aesthetic sense of Paris during the regency of Anne of Austria, mother of Louis XIV. In the 18th century, he was praised alongside Poussin.

フランスの画家。パリで生まれ，当時大半の画家がイタリアに学んだのに比し，生涯この地で制作。S.ブーエのアトリエで学び，1644年オテル･ランベール･ド･トリニーの装飾を手がける。40年代初めパリ滞在中のプッサンの影響をうけ，古典的で調和ある世界を描く。50年以後はラファエロの作品に学び，〈フランスのラファエロ〉と呼ばれた。ルイ14世の母后アンヌ･ドートリッシュによる摂政時代のパリの美意識を示す。18世紀にはプッサンと並んで賞揚された。
