Prontosil

...It is a chemotherapy agent against bacteria and was the mainstay of chemotherapy until the development of antibiotics.
[Development History]
In 1935, G. Domagk of Germany discovered that sulfanilamide chrysoidine (brand name Prontosil), developed in 1932, was effective against streptococcal sepsis in mice. In the same year, J. Trefouël, a bacteriologist at the Pasteur Institute in France, and his colleagues revealed that the active ingredient in Prontosil was sulfamine, which is produced when Prontosil is broken down in the body.

From [Domag]

…He later became a lecturer at the University of Grieswald (1924), a professor of pathology and pathological anatomy at the Münster Institute (1928), and then head of the Laboratory of Experimental Pathology and Bacteriology at the Bayer Dye Company. During this time, he engaged in research into bactericidal dyes, and in 1935, he discovered that sulfanilamide chrysoidine (brand name Prontosil), developed at the same institute, was effective against streptococci, which led to the popularity of sulfa drugs. For this achievement, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1939, but was forced to decline the award due to the policies of the Nazi government, and was awarded the prize again in 1947. …
