Lycia; Lykia

Japanese: リュキア(英語表記)Lycia; Lykia
Lycia; Lykia
Ancient name of a region in southwestern Anatolia facing the Mediterranean Sea. Located between Caria and Pamphylia, it is linked to the Taurus Mountains in the north. Cuneiform documents from the 14th and 13th centuries BC show that the Lycians were sandwiched between the spheres of influence of the Hittites and Greeks. In the 8th century BC, the Lycian League was formed as a confederation of at least 20 cities, and engaged in maritime trade. With the establishment of the Achaemenid Empire, it became a vassal state of Persia, but autonomy centered around the confederation of cities continued. In 43 AD, it was annexed to the Roman province of Pamphylia, but from the 4th century onwards it became an independent province. Ruins in this region have unearthed Greek-style public buildings as well as unique tombs.
