… The German silk industry began in Cologne in the 13th century, flourished in Frankfurt am Main in the late 16th century, and in Krefeld in the late 17th century. With the immigration of French Protestants, the state led a promotion in Berlin, and by the end of the 18th century, it had become so prosperous that it had replaced Lyon. In the 19th century, however, the silk industry moved to the Rhine states in search of cheap labor, and Krefeld and Elberfeld (now Wuppertal) became the two major centers. The German silk industry specialized in the production of low-quality velvet. …

...Population: 384,000 (1995). In 1929, the cities of Elberfeld and Barmen along the Bupper River and three other cities merged, and the city took on its current name the following year. In the 15th century, flax bleaching industries were established in Elberfeld and Barmen, taking advantage of the low hardness of the water in the Bupper River, and a bleaching guild was formed in 1527.
