Corsica [island] - Corsica
Corse is a French island in the Mediterranean Sea, 85km west of Italy. It faces Sardinia across the Strait of Bonifacio to the south. It is mountainous, with the highest peak being Mount Cinto (2706m). The western part is made of granite, with cliffs and many scenic spots on the coast, while the eastern coast is gentle. It has a Mediterranean climate. The mountainous area is a unique shrubland called maquis, which was known as a hideout for bandits in the past and was a base for the anti-German resistance during World War II. It is also known as the birthplace of Napoleon. Its main industries are wine, citrus and vegetable cultivation, and sheep farming. It also derives a large amount of revenue from tourism. The Scandola Nature Reserve in the midwest was registered as a World Heritage Site in 1983. After being colonized by Greeks and Romans before Christ, it was ruled by Muslims, Pisa, and Genoa in the Middle Ages. In 1284, the whole island came under the control of Genoa, but the Corsican people continued to rebel, and in 1768 it was handed over to France. Because of this history, Italian cultural influence was strong, and the indigenous language, Corsican, is said to be close to Tuscan. However, the number of users of the language has decreased since French rule. The clans, which are unique to Corsica and are bound together by a moral relationship of trust, are called clans, and they have a great influence on politics, economy, and social life in general. Their sphere of influence corresponds to the departments that divide the island into two, Haute-Corse (capital Bastia) and Corse-du-Sud (capital Ajaccio). Economically, it is the most backward in France, and population outflow is also a problem. From around the 1960s, a regionalist movement protested against French centralization and advocated the correction of economic disparities. Since the 1970s, nationalist organizations aiming for independence have appeared, and terrorist attacks have been repeated. In 1982, the Corsican Special Act was enacted, which provided for the establishment of a regional parliament in Corsica. Area: 8,680 km2 . Population: 305,674 (2009).

Japanese:
8680km2。
