A city in northwestern Chiba Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1937. It spreads from the coast of Tokyo Bay to the western part of the Shimousa Plateau. During the Edo period, the city center prospered as a temple town for Funabashi Daijingu Shrine and as a post town where the Chiba Kaido and Narita Kaido roads met. Since the early Showa period, it has developed into a residential city of Tokyo with the electrification of the Sobu Main Line, and especially after World War II, huge housing estates were built inland, causing a rapid increase in population. The reclaimed coastal land is part of the Keiyo Industrial Area, and is home to food, steel, and other industries. Its manufactured goods shipments amounted to 549.1 billion yen (2003), ranking sixth in the prefecture. In 1981, the large shopping center LaLaport opened on the reclaimed land, and has become very popular. Nakayama Racecourse and Funabashi Racecourse are located in the city, and the city is served by the Keisei Electric Railway, Shin-Keisei Electric Railway, Tobu Noda Line, Tokyo Metro Tozai Line, Hokuso Railway, Toyo Rapid Railway, JR Musashino Line, Keiyo Line, and the Bayshore Route.
